DEAN DON FELKER FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AWARD

January 2001 An anonymous donor has established additional awards for Pennsylvania Extension Agents. "In keeping with the ideals of the National Dean Don Felker Financial Management Award for program excellence, I would like to establish a statewide award for the two best presentations that would be forwarded to the national association for consideration.

...My hope is to encourage more of your members to develop, present, and evaluate programs that will help individuals and families make decisions and plans for their present and future needs. A suggestion is $100 for First Place and $50 for Second place - however I leave the final decision to your organization. Should you determine that three awards are more appropriate, allocate the money accordingly.

Sincerely,

An Anonymous Donor

REACHING NEW AUDIENCE AWARD

November 2002 An anonymous donor has established an additional award for Pennsylvania Extension Agents. "Though we have come a long way, there is still much to be done in enhancing the diversity of our audiences." - Guidelines for this new award are still being developed. The donor has agreed to support this award for at least 3 years. The possibility for continued funding exists if documented impact and award applicants exist. Award amount is $150 and can be for an individual or team that develops a new approach to program delivery to a new audience. Target audiences can be adults or youth who are reached with FCS programming for a member of PEAFCS. The program can be a new creative way to deliver educational materials already available; creation of a new program for specific delivery to a new audience; support for services to translate or present information, or any other new approach to expanding program outreach within the community.

Award recipient must provide a summary (no longer than one page) of the program through the PEAFCS newsletter so every member has a chance to gain another idea that might be adapted in other areas.

Sincerely,

An Anonymous Donor

Judges Tips for Award Preparation

Prepared by Laurie Stevens, North Carolina for the NEAFCS Training Task Force

1. It is very important that upon submitting an application for an award that you follow all of the guidelines and submit all of the required items. Otherwise you will be disqualified or would otherwise receive a low score. The judging criteria for each award is printed in the Awards Manual. Members should use the manual as a guide when preparing your application. The awards manual can also be found at http://www.neafcs.org

2. Awards requiring letters of recommendation MUST have these to be eligible. If someone is responsible for securing these letters after it leaves your hands, it is good to follow up with that person to see that it has been done. If they are not attached, your application will be disqualified.

3. In your application you need to state that the eligibility requirements have been met - i.e. Grace Frysinger requires a minimum of 5 years of NEAFCS membership.

4. When you receive your application back it could have numerical markings on it. A good point made by a judge "I would like to stress to the applicants that absolute point values are not to be interpreted as "grades." A score of 65 does not constitute a failing mark! We used the points to create a relevant ranking of the applications for ourselves. A better use of the evaluation forms would be for the applicants to look at the individual categories, such as the program outline, and see how they fared."

5. When material beyond what is required is sent - the judges do not read or consider these when rating the application. Make sure all the required information is included in the awards application.

6. Before submitting your application, ask someone who knows nothing about your project to read it. They can help identify areas that are not clear.

7. Here are some judge tips that are specific to the Program of Excellence through Research Award:

  • Be sure that your write-up includes all aspects, keeping in mind that a primary purpose of the award is that research is used to strengthen Extension programming. Many applications stopped short at making recommendations based on findings. Complete applications let us know how the research findings were used to create or strengthen an Extension program.
  • Although most applications included some original research, it is acceptable to base a project on an existing research project. If this is the case, detail must be given about the project for the judge to tell it's merits. Merely referencing is not sufficient detail.
  • Abstracts of the project are to include all key points of the project. This should include summation of the findings and/or implications of the project. Many stopped short at describing the project.
  • Research synopses should include critical elements of a research project that enable the judge to determine whether sound procedures were used, or results can be considered valid. This includes as appropriate, response rate, sample size, background information about the persons in the sample, and how representative the sample was to the population for which the Extension program was intended.
  • Results can be summarized. However, the writing should be a clear reflection of the data analyses. For example, when amounts are referred to, use actual percentages rather than words like "man" or "a few." If several items were determined as most important factors, then list them by frequency amounts.
  • Be sure that study objectives are the same as those measures reported on. And, that measures and results offered, are those from which implications are drawn.

8. Here are some comments that relate to the Community Partnership Award:

  • Document the need of the partnership and the need for the program.
  • Address learner impact and program outcomes other than as outputs - i.e. # of participants or # of meetings.
  • Be sure that your partnership is that of a collaborator than just a cosponsor of a program.
  • It is best if partners are not identified as short-term or "event" oriented.
  • The members of the Community Partnership Award recognize NEAFCS members of teams of NEAFCS members working with a partnership. For a team application in this category, it is not all the members of the partnership.

Other Helpful Tips to Consider

1. There have been a lot of questions concerning the plastic sleeve that the award is to be packaged. These types of plastic holders come in many different styles. Members need to select the style that is best for their application - i.e. applications in radio and/or TV need the sleeve that open at the top only so the tapes do not fall out.

2. When submitting the application, be sure to show impact of programs, not just number attending. Include evidence of knowledge gained, skills learned, behavior changed, etc.

3. For newsletters, style and format are very important. If they are not strong, the reader will lose interest and not even get to the content.

4. For radio, judges prefer content that doesn't sound like a lecture, but gives a little more personal feel. Avoid rigid scripts, and be sure your content contains "talking points." You want your delivery to be natural, relaxed and effective.

5. Be neat.

6. Type your name on the award application form as you wish it to appear on the awards certificate, should you win.

7. Be sure to have all required signatures on the Award Application Form.

8. For team award applications, only the leader submits the application. It is the responsibility of the team leader to list team members and indicate NEAFCS membership or non-membership. Be sure all names are spelled correctly.

9. Deadlines must be met.

10. Be sure your state and national dues have been paid by February 1

11. Be sure to include the 50 word summary which is a brief synopsis of the project or program for which the award is given.

12. Members must sent 4 copies of the general application form, each of the same quality and must be typed or computer generated. Don't use "white out" or blacken out the name of the applicant. This looks very messy.

13. Remember to thank your sponsors.

14. If at first you don't succeed, try again.

Awards:How to Apply for Them

Carolyn Gilles, Pennsylvania for the NEAFCS Training Task Force

There are the "wishbones", the "jawbones", and the "backbones."
The wishbones wish they had,
the jawbones talk about it,
but the backbones have done it.

Rules to Follow

1. Allow enough time

2. Meet the deadlines and time schedule.

3. Credentials should match the award you are seeking.

4. After it is written, look at it, ask yourself - "Would I read it?"

Add PIZAZZ!

1. Use a grabber - do low income families have more fun?

2. List current and most outstanding items and accomplishments first

3. List impact, results, and change to clientele.

4. Tell why or how your method is different

5. Does it fit the priority areas?

6. Does program adapt, build on, or generate other programs?

7. Include research evidence

8. Emphasize educational aspects - what was taught or learned

9. Was there a cost benefit?

High Performers are Award Winners - Application Should Show:

High source of energy
Positive state of mind
Sense of Self
Feel part of a total program
Strong sense of purpose, vision, and mission
Show creativity
Interest in the work
Experience setbacks but adapt to them
Expect, anticipate, and adapt to change

"Nobody climbs the ladder of success with their hands in their pockets."

John Garfield
